knowing your Hobie catHaving improved your sailing abilities, in the 'Building your Sailing Knowledge' course, you need to get to know your Hobie cat better. This youth sailing course concentrates on the boat controls and their effect. We offer the 'Knowing your Hobie Cat' course for twelve to sixteen year olds.

Knowing your Hobie Cat

 Duration:  2 days - 1 evenings
 Experience:  Building Sailing Knowledge
 Minimum age:  12 years old
 Held when:  Weekends and school holidays
 Coach ratio:  No more than 6 students per coach
 Safety boats:  No more than 9 dingies per safety boat
 Dingies used:  Hobie 14s, Hobie 16s
 Certification:  Knowing your Hobie Cat

On completion of the 'Knowing your Hobie Cat' course the student will be able to rig, launch and sail your Hobie Cat in any direction and return from the place you started from:

Practical sailing abilities

  • Launch and recover a Hobie cat in an onshore breeze
  • Reef a Hobie cat ashore, as per the conditions
  • Understand the 4 core elements of Hobie sailing

  • course sailed
  • Sail 'close hauled' on a 'close beam' & 'broad reach' & on a 'run'
  • Tack towards the wind (upwind sailing)
  • Gybe from a 'broad reach' to a 'broad reach'
  • Can 'right' a capsized Hobie without assistance
  • Come alongside a moored boat, jetty or floating dock
  • Prepare for & takeup a tow from a powerboat
  • Stop the boat at any given point
  • Tie appropriate knots

  • Campers are under adult supervision at all times
