introduction to dinghy sailingLearning to sail can be the start of something new and exciting and the best way to get to grips with the basics is by learning to sail a dinghy.  This Youth Sailing camp will take you through all the necessary sail training to enable you to be confident out on the water.  We offer the 'Introduction to Dinghy Sailing' course from eight to sixteen year olds.

Introduction to Dinghy Sailing

 Duration:  2 days - 1 evenings
 Experience:  Must be able to swim
 Minimum age:  8 years old
 Held when:  Weekends and school holidays
 Coach ratio:  No more than 6 students per coach
 Safety boats:  No more than 9 dinghies per safety boat
 Dingies used:  
 "Topaz Race X" ( 1 or 2 man dinghies)

Introduction to Dinghy Sailing course content

On completion of the 'Introduction to Dinghy Sailing' course the student will have a basic understanding of how a dinghy sails and some experience of handling and steering the dinghy:

Practical sailing abilities

  • Don & wear personal bouyancy aid correctly
  • Confidence in the water wearing a personal bouyancy aid
  • Identify wind direction
  • Help rigging a dinghy
  • Launch a dinghy and get under way
  • Secure a dinghy to its trailer
  • Help with the recovery of equipment used
  • Steer whist sailing or being towed
  • Steer while tacking on a 'reach to reach' course
  • Understand basic dinghy controls
  • Understand the basic principles of controlling speed
  • Paddle a dinghy around a short course
  • Understand why to stay with the dinghy if it capsizes

Background sailing knowledge

  • Name the basic parts of a dinghy
  • Understand what action to take to help someone in distress
  • Understand local hazards
  • Understand how to prepare for a tow
  • Know how to tie stopper knots

Introduction to Dinghy Sailing course notes

  • Students under 9 must be accompanied by a parent or adult sibling
  • Campers are under adult supervision at all times
  • All sailing & safety equipment will be supplied
  • All food & beverages will be supplied
  • Tuckshop will be available after meals
