building sailing knowledgeOnce you've learnt the basics of dinghy sailing, in the 'Introduction to Dinghy Sailing' course, you need to expand on your knowledge and skills. Building Sailing Knowledge, the next youth sailing course concentrates on building your sailing knowledge, We offer the 'Building Sailing Knowledge' course to eight to sixteen year olds.

Building Sailing Knowledge

 Duration:  2 days - 1 evenings
 Experience:  Introduction to Dinghy Sailing
 Minimum age:  8 years old
 Held when:  Weekends and school holidays
 Dingies used:  Race X's, 09rs, Sonnets, Stadt 15
 Coach ratio:  No more than 6 students per coach
 Safety boats:  No more than 9 dinghies per safety boats
 Certification:  Building Sailing Knowledge

Building Sailing Knowledge course content

On completion of the 'Building Sailing Knowledge' course the student will have a range of skills and background knowledge and will be well on their way to becoming a confident sailor.

Practical sailing abilities

  • Put the boat 'head to wind' for rigging
  • Launch & recover a dinghy with an offshore breeze
  • Rig a boat with minimal help
  • Understand how to manoeuvre a dolly, keeping clear of other dingies
  • Control speed by 'lying to'
  • Get out of 'irons' (head to wind)
  • Tack 'close reach to close reach'
  • Sail a shallow triangle course under supervision
  • Practical understanding of the five core essentials of sailing
  • Return to a beach or jetty
  • Right a capsized dingy with minimal help
  • Tie appropriate knots

Background sailing knowledge

  • Understand the 'no go zone' (head to wind)
  • Understand what windward, leeward & gybe means
  • Understand what to do when a dinghy on port & dinghy on starboard meet
  • Understand how to find the wind in a number of ways
  • Know what to wear when sailing
  • Know how to choose & adjust buoyancy aid

  • Paddle skis
  • Marshmallow roasting

Builbing Sailing Knowledge course notes

  • Students under 9 must be accompanied by a parent or adult sibling
  • Campers are under adult supervision at all times
  • All sailing & safety equipment will be supplied
  • All food & beverages will be supplied
  • Tuckshop will be available after meals
